Outside work

Ten marathons, two Ironman 70.3s, 8–12 hours of training a week.

This is what I spend most of my time on outside work. Has been for a while.

Holding up the Madrid Marathon 2025 medal at Plaza de Colón. Mid-stroke in open water, orange swim cap, freestyle. Exiting the swim under the IRONMAN SWIM banner. Morning swim training in a Finnish lake, sailfish wetsuit. Cycling at Iso-Syöte after a 208 km ride. Riding a road bike in the rain on wet roads. At the IRONMAN 70.3 Tallinn 2025 finish, wrapped in the Estonian flag, holding the medal next to the bike. Zurich Barcelona Marathon, in front of the Arc de Triomf. Running mid-race in a Nike singlet. On the IRONMAN 70.3 Lahti 2024 finish photo platform, fists raised. A bracelet of city-tagged 42K marathon medallions on the wrist. Cross-country skiing on a sunny winter day in Finland.

Story

First job, 2003, in St Petersburg: avionics on the Antonov An-148 aircraft, plus a Windows simulator of the Collins CDU-6200 cockpit terminal.

2004–2009 at Elilink Consulting, also in St Petersburg, on netViz Enterprise — a Windows desktop tool for network and data visualisation, used by enterprise and government customers. The last few months I was leading a small team.

Moved to Finland in 2009 for work, settled in Oulu. Mobile and security work for the next decade: Boogie Software, then F-Secure, where I started contributing to OpenVPN. In 2017 I founded Lesti Software with OpenVPN as my main client. Still there nine years later — Windows kernel-level VPN code these days — and open to the right additional engagement.
